What is Title IX?
Title IX is a federal civil rights law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in any school or educational program receiving federal funds, public or private. It is part of the Education Amendments of 1972 and protects all students and employees. Title IX states:
“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”
The University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Title IX Office is committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and respectful campus environment—one that aligns with the university’s mission to serve its students and the broader UAFS community.
In compliance with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, the university prohibits all forms of sex-based discrimination, including sexual harassment, sexual violence, pregnancy discrimination, stalking, and retaliation. The law also requires every institution of higher education to designate a Title IX Coordinator responsible for ensuring institutional compliance and coordinating response efforts.
The UAFS Title IX Office works collaboratively with all areas of campus to uphold these commitments by developing policies, offering training, and supporting individuals affected by sexual misconduct or discrimination. We offer general and specialized Title IX training sessions for faculty, staff, students, and campus organizations.
