UAFS College of Education Leads in Common Core State Standards

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan praised states for developing the Common Core State Standards, as the Standards are “an important step toward the improvement of quality education nationwide. States have come together to develop standards that are internationally benchmarked and include the knowledge and skills that students must learn to succeed in college and career.”

Arne continues, “The release of these Common Core State Standards is just the beginning of the effort. As states move forward to implement the standards, they will need to translate standards into classroom teaching that will help all students master these new standards.”

The UAFS College of Education joins this national effort through providing professional development to teachers, and future teachers, from nationally recognized literacy scholars Dr. David Jolliffe and Ms. Judy Fox.  On September 15, UAFS College of Education will host a workshop from 9 am to 3 pm in the Reynolds Room of the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center that will heed Secretary Duncan’s call to “translate standards into classroom teaching that will help students.”

The workshop will focus on how teachers can initiate the transition to the Common Core Standards, which require more rigorous instruction and require students to perform at an internationally competitive level in math and literacy.  Jolliffe and Fox will guide teachers in the process of integrating science and social studies non-fiction texts into literary study, how to design authentic learning tasks for students, and to develop instructional units and lessons that match the demanding exemplars in new standards.

All educators are welcome, and admission is free, but registration is required for educators who are not current UAFS students.  For more information, please see the attached flyer.
